For First Generation Travelers

Helloo.

Adding an extra “o” to my hello lets my friends read the greeting in my voice, hopefully. It’s not an “ooooo”, it’s a punching, resounding O. I’m not a fan of exclamation points, but I am a fan of exclamating (this isn’t a word, but you know what I mean). So helloo, i’m glad you’re here.

Go somewhere. I dare you.

I have one goal. I want to create a space that provides a different perspective to traveling and makes travel an inclusive environment. There will be many cute pictures, many tourist stop recommendations, and many “what I pack in my carry-on” blogs. I will curate a playlist that focuses on the culture of the country you’re visiting, like a soundtrack for your trip based on folk music, traditional anthems, and songs from movies and TV based on the location. This is something I do for myself every time I travel and it elevates the experience—like i’m in my own sitcom and this is the soundtrack to my life. I promise there is nothing more ethereal, more heavenly than being in Ireland by yourself, eating a cliff-side lunch, listening to Galway Girl by the High Kings.

All the faux pas, all the dirty, murky must-knows of each country, i’ll give it to you. There will be recommendations for different budgets and honest, raw commentary on the experiences of traveling solo (or even with friends). Your budget is not your limit. I want that to be clear. Your limitations, your disability, your mental space— it does not define you and it should not deter your experience as a traveler. Traveling looks different for everyone— and it should. This blog is for hikers, it is for beach bums, it is for those just there for the wine and the vibes, and the ones who dare to go beyond the caution signs (though, maybe, don’t do this). I have stayed everywhere and anywhere. Well, maybe not the Ritz-Carlton, but I have stayed in 10-bed hostels, expensive Airbnbs, cheap room-only Airbnbs, hotels, home-stays, the gas station in Spain that one time, and the Finnish ferry station that other time… you get the point. Every trip, every adventure you go on, there will always be a chance of rain, sometimes that means you need to bring an umbrella, other times it means you should have known to not trust a posted bus schedule so you don’t get into a sketchy van in Greece. If you have never traveled by yourself, if you haven’t been out of the country, or even out of the midwest, this is the place for you. We all started there— and we are all going somewhere, together.

So, let’s go somewhere. I’ll help you.
